INVAMED | Varicose veins during pregnancy

Medical Park Hospital Cardiovascular Surgery Specialist Dr. Atilla Saraç warned that if varicose veins are not treated before a planned pregnancy, they may grow larger during pregnancy and cause serious complications for expectant mothers.

Stating that painful varicose veins, which are one of the common and worrying health problems during pregnancy, are caused by the important hemodynamic effects of pregnancy on the pelvis and leg veins. Atilla Saraç said, “Varicose veins tend to shrink or disappear 3-4 months after giving birth, but for some women who had varicose veins before pregnancy, had multiple pregnancies, had a family history of varicose veins, were overweight or tended to stand for long periods, getting rid of varicose veins is not difficult. It may not be easy.”

Why are varicose veins common during pregnancy?

Noting that three main reasons trigger the development of varicose veins during pregnancy, Dr. Saraç says, “During pregnancy, the body produces more blood than normal to help the baby grow. As the baby grows, the pressure exerted by the uterus increases, so blood gets trapped in the veins and varicose veins occur. Pregnancy hormones soften the walls of blood vessels, making it harder for them to work properly. In any case, the blood accumulates in the legs, causing swelling in the legs and the formation of varicose veins.”

Potential danger: deep vein thrombosis (DVT) during pregnancy

Noting that deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a serious, potentially life-threatening health problem caused by blood clots in the deep veins, typically in the legs, Dr. Atilla Saraç said, “While anyone can develop a blood clot, pregnant women are more prone. This is because pregnancy hormones cause blood flow to slow and blood to clot more. As blood flow slows, some of the cells can clot to form a DVT. If you are suffering from unexplained leg swelling, pain, or tenderness in the leg, increased temperature in the swollen or aching part of the leg, or red or discolored skin symptoms during pregnancy, consider the signals your body gives and consult your doctor urgently.”

Dr. Atilla Saraç that the VenaBLOCK procedure is one of the most effective and innovative methods in the treatment of varicose veins, Atilla Saraç said, “The VenaBLOCK procedure offers a comfortable and safe treatment option that completely removes the varicose veins within minutes without the need for anesthesia, without the need for pain, incisions, and stitches.”
